Enable Equalizer on Windows Media Player 12 with Windows 10. 1) As mentioned earlier, the default view of the WMP 12 will not show the equalizer. After opening the media player or while playing the music, click on ‘Switch to Now Playing’ as shown below. Windows Media Player / WMP as we know is an application produced by Microsoft to play audio and video files and also for observing images. Windows Media Player was there in the old versions of Windows and currently, it serves its purpose very interestingly on Windows 10 also. Designed by media lovers for media lovers. Windows Media Player 12—available as part of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.—plays more music and video than ever, including Flip Video and unprotected songs from your iTunes library!
If Windows Media Player 12 misbehaves and a simple restart — or resetting it to its default configuration — doesn't help, uninstall and reinstall the program from your computer. This procedure should resolve the Windows Media Player errors if they relate to the integrity of core program files. You can load Windows Media Player in Windows 10 by double-clicking its icon in the Start menu or taskbar, that strip along the desktop’s bottom edge. When you run Windows Media Player, the program automatically sorts through your computer’s stash of digital music, pictures, and videos. Windows Media Player 12 is the default media player available for Windows 8 and Windows 7. Version 12 has been enriched with additional features from the previous versions including a simplified interface and an improved play mode.
You can load Windows Media Player in Windows 10 by double-clicking its icon in the Start menu or taskbar, that strip along the desktop’s bottom edge.
When you run Windows Media Player, the program automatically sorts through your computer’s stash of digital music, pictures, and videos, automatically cataloging everything it finds.
But if you’ve noticed that some of your PC’s media is missing from the Windows Media Player Library, you can tell the player where to find those items by following these steps:
Note: Unlike the Music app, Windows Media Player can play OneDrive files only if they are synced to your PC. It can’t play music files that are available on OneDrive only through the Internet.
- Click Windows Media Player’s Organize button and choose Manage Libraries from the drop-down menu to reveal a pop-out menu. The pop-out menu lists the four types of media that Windows Media Player can handle: Music, Videos, Pictures, and Recorded TV.
- From the pop-out menu, choose the name of the type of files you’re missing.A window appears, as shown here, listing your monitored folders. For example, the player normally monitors the contents of your Music folder, so anything you add to your Music folder automatically appears in the Media Player Library, as well.Click the Add button and browse to a new folder you want Windows Media Player to monitor. But if you’re storing items elsewhere — perhaps on a portable hard drive, flash drive, network location, or your Public folder — here’s your chance to give the player directions to that other media stash.
- Click the Add button, select the folder or drive containing your files, click the Include Folder button, and click OK.Clicking the Add button brings the Include Folder window to the screen. Navigate to the folder you’d like to add — the folder on your portable hard drive, for example — and click the Include Folder button. Windows Media Player immediately begins monitoring that folder, adding the folder’s music to its library. To add music from even more folders or drives — perhaps a folder on another networked PC or a flash drive — repeat these steps until you’ve added all the places Windows Media Player should search for media. To stop the player from monitoring a folder, follow these steps, but in Step 3, click the folder you no longer want monitored and then click the Remove button.
When you run Windows Media Player, the program shows the media it has collected (shown here) and it continues to stock its library in the following ways:
Click an item from the left to see its contents on the right.
- Monitoring your folders: Windows Media Player constantly monitors your Music, Pictures, and Videos folders, as well as any other locations you’ve added. Windows Media Player automatically updates its library whenever you add or remove files from your folders. (You can change what folders Windows Media Player monitors by following the three preceding steps.)
- Adding played items: Anytime you play a music file on your PC or from the Internet, Windows Media Player adds the song or its Internet location to its library so that you can find it to play again later. Unless specifically told to, Windows Media Player doesn‘t add recently played items residing on other people’s PCs, USB flash drives, or memory cards. (It can’t play any music from OneDrive unless you’ve chosen to keep that music in sync with your PC.)
- Ripped music from CD: When you insert a music CD into your CD drive, Windows may offer to rip it. That’s computereze for copying the CD’s music to your PC, a task described in the “Ripping (Copying) CDs to Your PC” section, later in this chapter. Any ripped music automatically appears in your Windows Media Player Library. (Windows Media Player won’t copy DVD movies to your library, unfortunately, nor does it play the discs.)
- Downloaded music from online stores: When you buy a song and place it in your Music folder, Windows Media Player automatically stocks its library with your latest purchase.
Feel free to repeat the steps in this section to search for files whenever you want. Windows Media Player ignores the files it has already cataloged and adds any new ones.
Windows Media Player doesn’t offer an advanced editor for changing a song’s tags. Instead, the player edits them for you automatically from an online database.
Windows Media Player has been around in various forms for decades. While it used to be the default Windows media player, that’s changed for Windows 10. It now needs installing before it’s available and the method you use will depend on your Windows 10 version.
If you’re missing this classic Windows utility, we’re here to show you how to get it back quickly and for free. We’ll also offer up some alternative media players because Windows Media Player hasn’t been updated since 2009.
Where Has Windows Media Player Gone?
The quickest way to check if you have Windows Media Player 12 (the latest version) installed and enabled is to open the Start menu and search for it.
It comes as an “optional feature” for the majority of Windows 10 versions. However, Microsoft now disables it by default, so there’s every chance your search will yield no results.
There are also two versions of the operating system that don’t have it at all: Windows 10 N and Windows 10 NK.
This is because the European Commission ruled that Microsoft’s practice of pre-installing some software on their operating systems is anti-competitive. Thus, Microsoft was forced to offer alternative versions of Windows 10 that have some of these key features removed. Not only do they lack Windows Media Player, but they also exclude apps such as Video and Voice Recorder.
No matter your operating system version, we’ll show you how to install Windows Media Player for Windows 10—legally and for free.
How to Get Windows Media Player 12
It’s extremely simple to install Windows Media Player 12. The method you need will depend on your version of Windows 10.

Alternatives to Windows Media Player

VLC can play video files, webcams, streams and more. It’s also very lightweight and fast.
Other good free choices are Winamp, which boasts great visualization and interface customization, and MusicBee, which is a powerful music manager that also supports podcasts and radio.

For audio, do a system search for Groove Music. The latter also comes with a store and streaming service, but you can just use it to manage your local music collection if you desire.

- Thanks very much. Very important you download for either 64 or 32 bit.
- Windows Media Player was causing me nothing but issues on Windows 10. Problems with the database, problems playing files and problems with DNLA server. I removed it. I replaced it with iTunes and VLC. The only piece missing was DNLA server. I use the DIVX media server. I have read that WMP will not be supported in the future .. not sure if that is true.
- No longer works for latest build of Windows 10 Pro N. Tried both x86 and x64. Runs the update but nothing gets installed.
- This use to work. However, updating to the Creators update of Windows 10, removes the Media Feature Pack for those with the 'N' version, and will not allow you to re-installed.
- Under the heading 'Alternatives to Windows Media Player' you've listed one, basically - VLC. The other is just the built-in player, Groove.Don't get me wrong, VLC is an excellent video player but it's not really a suitable replacement for WMP for music. VLC has no music browser, for e.g., a lot of people feel they need that. I use VLC as a back-up video player (it's ugly and far from smooth and fast most of the time) but I use Foobar2000 as my WMP replacement (and have since WMP 11) as, although its as ugly as VLC it is also likewise skinnable so I can match it to my PC theme. It is very versatile and extensible.Winamp is another such free alternative which is also skinnable and extensible.MusicBee is another similar free programme (which is particularly well matched to Windows 10's Metro app theme).Just thought I'd offer some actual alternative players (plural) other than the default and the old default plus VLC.
- 'If you’re running 32-bit, tick to download Microsoft-Windows-MediaFeaturePack-OOB-Package_x64.msu. If you’re running 64-bit, select the other file.'
Whoops..you need the x86 version for 32-bit Windows.- What I was thinking--the writer must know little about the Windows eco-system and numeric values. And VLC is the only alternative? Hmmm . . . may want to do some homework, Joe.
- To the pinhead who that wrote the above direction, drop that Ivy League Community College Degree and go somewhere where they using a dude with shit for brains like yourself.
- There's no reason to be an abusive jerk. Can we get this guy moderated down here, please?
